Common Diseases

Copper Toxicosis

Bedlington Terriers are mostly free of common genetic diseases. Naturally, their proper vaccination is very important as for any other breed.

There is one genetic disease which is/was present in Bedlington Terriers: the Copper Toxicosis. This is a liver disease casued by the inability to utilize and store copper properly. The disease can seriusly shorten a dog's life, it is a serious matter!

Should your dog suffer from this disease, you will have to take extra care when composing your dog's diet and that includes the drinking water as well. A small portion of copper can be found in almost everything, you will have to be very thourough when you are planning a low-copper diet for your four-legged friend.

DNA Testing

It is important to know that these days most Bedlington Terriers are DNA tested against this genetic treat. Ask your breeder for the puppy's and the parents' DNA test results.
